Understanding Power Levels & Pricing

Each manufacturer produces hearing aids in multiple power levels. For example, Phonak’s flagship product- the Audeo Marvel comes in a 90 (top spec), 70 and 50 range. The simplest way to understand power levels is based on activity and the environments you typically find yourself in. If you are regularly in busy environments with high levels of background noise, such as an office or restaurants then the higher power levels are for you. If you are regularly in quiet environments such as at home, then the lower power levels are sufficient.

Which manufacturer is the best?

That’s a great question! Each hearing aid manufacturer specializes in their own features that each offer a unique benefit..

Phonak
These hearing aids utilize Marvel technology and are known for their clear and rich sound, as well as the ability to connect to the Phonak app and be rechargeable. The Marvel technology platform in Phonak hearing aids helps to automatically classify streamed speech and streamed music signals for an enhanced listening experience. Marvel technology is geared towards identifying even more listening situations for the patient and helps to adapt and apply a calculated gain to different hearing situations.

Oticon
These hearing aids are known for their quality devices and multiple programming features. Oticon also has different specialty features like BrainHearing technology and OpenSound Optimizer to help you adjust to wearing hearing aids faster. Typically Oticon hearing aids may be pricier than the other hearing aids. In addition, other cons for Oticon hearing aids include occasional sound cutting out as well as needing multiple tunings.

Signia / Siemens
Siemens offers slim and stylish looks and a longer battery life One special feature of the Signia brand in the Siemens brand is the company’s Own Voice Processing technology, which recognizes the hearing aid user’s own voice. Thus allowing the users to no longer having to worry how differently their voice sounds while wearing hearing aids. Unfortunately, these hearing aids may not be best for those with a profound loss, and they are typically pricier.

ReSound
These hearing aids allow you to enjoy a world of birlliant sound. ReSound have focused on connectivity, and their hearing aids easily stream audio from iPhone and Androids. Witha range of models to suit all needs and preferences, ReSound have always invested heavily in the late audio clarification, ensuring an exceptional sound clarity.

Unitron
Part of the greater Sonova brand, and takes its own approach with hearing aids. Puts great stress and priority on value and patient satisfaction. Unitron hearing aids are renowned for their aesthetics, comfortable ergonomics and outstanding ease of use. Their new Remote Plus App helps prompt wearers with tips and advice to help them acclimatize successfully to their hearing aids. It may not be powerful enough for certain hearing losses. Also, some patients have reported intermittent “stuttering” when streaming their Bluetooth for music in their hearing aids.

What's are the technology differences?

There are three main hearing aid power levels – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. The purpose of this article is to explain the difference between these technology levels, both in terms of feature differences and which type of person will benefit from each.

Basic

Signia 3nx/Phonak M50/Oticon OPN 3/ Unitron 5/ ReSound 5 (entry level technology)

These are fine ‘entry-level’ hearing aids, meaning they are suitable for those with mild hearing loss who do not live the most active lifestyle or find themselves in loud environments. Specific features which make them entry level include:

– 24 processing channels
– Ideal for patients who are only in quiet environments.
– Requires patients to manually adjust their hearing aids.
– The audiologist has very limited fine tuning capabilities with the hearing aids. Adjustments are made on a broad level (i.e. low and high but not individual frequencies).

Intermediate

Signia 5nx/Phonak M70/Oticon OPN 2/ Unitron 7/ ReSound 7 (mid level technology)

The medium technology level, these are a suitable option for people looking to improve their hearing generally, but who don’t spend too much time in loud environments. Specific features which make them mid level include:

– 32 processing channels
– Geared towards those whose primary listening situation is in a quiet environment, but may occasionally be in noisy situations.
– Some settings may need to be manually adjusted, and have few automatic adjustments.
– This type of technology uses a more basic noise reduction algorithm.
– The channels or frequency adjustment that the audiologist uses to fine tune the hearing aid is reduced, however does allow for some fine tuning.
– Ideal for patients who have a very gradually sloping hearing loss or the same amount of loss across all frequencies.

Advanced

Signia 7nx/Phonak M90/Oticon OPN 1/ Unitron 9/ ReSound 9 (premium level technology)

This technology level is suitable for all hearing aid users, and is the recommended level for people who often find themselves in loud environments. From automatically adjusting to your environment, to allowing for exact programming by the audiologist, these are the most advanced hearing aids and result in the best hearing improvement. Specific features which make these mid-level include:

– 48 processing channels
– Perfect for patients who have a very active lifestyle and spend a majority of their time in noisy/complex situations.
– This level of technology will automatically adjust as needed depending on the environment the patient is in.
– Utilizes cutting-edge noise reducing algorithms to help give the patient the latest advanced features and premium technology.
-In addition, this level of technology gives the audiologist the most control over the fine tuning and programming of your devices. For example, if you have a loss in which you can hear low frequencies much better than high frequencies, then the audiologist can set each frequency needed with the specific amount of amplification needed.

How do I know which hearing aid I need?

There is no one-size-fits-all for hearing aids. Hearing aid recommendations depend on a number of factors – your lifestyle, your hearing test results, your needs and your preferences for hearing aid looks and features. The best way to find which hearing aid you need is to contact our team of audiologists. Our hearing experts will speak to you about all of these factors before making product recommendation.
